Our Woods and Why we Choose Them

Our Woods

We buy sustainably and locally sourced raw materials from central Ohio mills. Some of our specialty woods come from a company in Oregon that responsibly locates burl from fallen trees. All of our wood is kiln dried or air dried at or below 12% moisture content to reduce risk of your wood warping over time.

Epoxy Tables

Epoxy Molds

We use Stone Coat Countertops epoxy which takes longer to work with than other epoxies, but is well worth the wait. This epoxy can take up to 72 hours to dry and 30 days to fully cure. We always recommend light use for the first couple weeks.

After the wood is leveled and sanded; we build molds using MDF and seal them keeping the epoxy in while applying downward pressure to the wood to make sure it does not move. We also create seals around the cracks in order to reduce the amount of epoxy needed and to reduce overflow. We apply a quick coat of epoxy to seal the wood making sure no air bubbles release into the epoxy. Partially through the drying process is when the fun starts and we can assist the epoxy in creating unique designs. This process is unpredictable and can lead to some amazing results.

Finishing the Product

By far our favorite part is the finish. We love seeing the transformation of a raw slab of wood into something one of a kind. It takes many man hours, but for us the process is therapy for the soul. We started making furniture for our family and friends and because of your support we are able to bring our craft to anyone who wants to brighten their living space with a unique, elegant piece from Hunter Design. Thank you!

Finishing Oils

We Use Several Types Of Oils That Are All Natural And Food Safe

Oils Bring The Wood To Life And Make The Wood Grain Come To Life

Oils Will Not Provide The Same Protection That An Epoxy Finish Does

An Epoxy Clear Coat Finish Gives a Stunning, Glass-like look.

Although Durable, Epoxy Will Protect The Wood Of Your Piece, However It Is More Prone To Scratches and Dings

Epoxy Requires More “Kid Glove” Handling, But Can Be Renewed If Damaged
